Veil of Arda

The airs of the world

In the Elves' conception of Arda, the world was surrounded by layers of airs, surmounted by Ilmen, the highest of these airs, in which the stars pursued their paths through the sky. It was these airs that comprised the Veil of Arda, by which it was shrouded from the Void beyond. The Veil of Arda and the winds that blew within it fell under the power of Manwë Súlimo, the Elder King and highest of the Valar.
