Somath

An alternative form of ‘Solmath

A shortened version of the name of the second month of the year used in the Shire Calendar and in Bree, known in full as Solmath. It was usual to omit the 'l' when pronouncing the name, so that the month sometimes also came to be written informally as 'Somath'. This month was broadly equivalent to modern February, covering the period of thirty days between 22 January and 20 February on a Gregorian calendar. Somath's name is derived from the Old English Solmónað, which literally means 'month of mud'.
