Map of Shathûr

The Mountains of Moria

A Dwarvish word thought to mean 'clouds', and used as a shortened version of Bundushathûr, one of the three Mountains of Moria. The full name was translated into Elvish as Fanuidhol, and rendered in English as 'Cloudyhead'. The mountain was the easternmost of the three, rising to the north and east of Kheled-zâram and forming a part of the eastern edge of Nanduhirion beneath the East-gate of Moria. To travellers approaching Moria from the north and west, as did the Company of the Ring, Shathûr would have been the left-most of the three famous peaks, emerging from the clouds over the shoulder of Barazinbar or Caradhras.
