Outer Void

The Void beyond the Walls of the World

The empty space that surrounded the world of Arda, from which it was protected by the encircling Walls of the World. In this conception, the Outer Void was beyond not merely the world, but also the paths of the Sun and Moon and even the stars, all of which belonged to the airs that surrounded Arda.

Though the Walls of the World separated Arda from the Outer Void, there was an opening between the two regions, known as the Door of Night. It was through this Door that the Valar thrust Melkor after his defeat in the War of Wrath, leaving him trapped in the Void. It is prophesied that he will one day escape the Outer Void and return to fight the Last Battle that will bring Arda to an end, at least in its present form.
