Old Gamgee

A title for Sam Gamgee’s father

A name or title occasionally given to Sam's father Hamfast Gamgee, otherwise known as Gaffer Gamgee, who lived at Number 3, Bagshot Row beneath Hobbiton Hill. Hamfast had been born in the year III 2926 (or 1326 by the Shire-reckoning), making him ninety-two years old in the year his son Sam set out with Frodo Baggins from the Shire. He survived the events of the War of the Ring, and Sharkey's takeover of the Shire, and lived on to see Sam become Mayor before he died at the age of 102.

Notes

1

Obviously the title 'Old Gamgee' could not have been applied to Hamfast throughout his entire life. It must have come into use as he entered old age, though its dating is uncertain; our only recorded use is in III 3019, when Hamfast would have been 93 years old.
