Creatures of Midgewater

"There were thousands of them, and they squeaked all round, neek-breek, breek-neek..."
The Fellowship of the Ring I 11,
A Knife in the Dark

Deep in the heart of the Midgewater Marshes lived a colony of creatures that seemed to be of cricket-kind. As Strider led the Hobbits through the Marshes, they never encountered one of these creatures, but the night air was full of the incessant neek, breek sounds they made. From these sounds, Sam coined a name for them: the Neekerbreekers.
