Masterful

The title of Marmadoc Brandybuck

A title given to Marmadoc Brandybuck, who was Master of Buckland more than a hundred years before the War of the Ring. We know little of Marmadoc's history, but his title 'Masterful' shows that he must have been a powerful and respected Master of the Hall. He married Adaldrida Bolger and had many descendants, including Meriadoc of the Company of the Ring, who was the great-great-grandson of Marmadoc the Masterful.

Notes

1

In earlier versions of the Brandybuck family tree, Tolkien experimented with giving titles to the Masters of Buckland that derived from Latin. In that phase of composition, Marmadoc (there spelt 'Marmaduc') had the epithet Pancrator, ultimately from Greek, meaning no less than 'master of all'. The English version 'Masterful', while not quite so emphatic as the original, clearly represents Marmadoc as a particularly powerful member of the Brandybuck clan.
