The Man

A title given to Beren in Doriath

A title or identifier used by Nellas of Doriath to describe Beren. She was a witness to the wronging of Túrin by Saeros, events which had caused Túrin to exile himself from Doriath. It was thought that Túrin had set upon Saeros unprovoked, but Nellas had seen that it was in fact Saeros who had assaulted Túrin. In her testimony before King Thingol, she spoke of how Túrin reminded her of his kin, Beren the Man, who had won the hand of Thingol's daughter Lúthien and was well known in Doriath.

'The Man' as a title might seem more than a little non-specific, but from Nellas' perspective it made complete sense. She lived in a realm where Men were almost never seen, and indeed had been banned from entering until the time of Beren. For most of the Elves of Doriath, Túrin and Beren would have been the only Men they had ever encountered, so for them 'the Man' would refer to only one of a tiny handful of individuals.
