Ling

Another name for the shrub more usually known as heather, associated with moorland and open heaths. It was indeed on the heaths of northern Ithilien that ling was found by Frodo and Sam was they journeyed towards Cirith Ungol. Ling was also found widely throughout Middle-earth, though it is generally given its more common name of 'heather'; it was known as far north and west as the Bree and the borders of the Shire, and was also known to grow on the hillsides near Rivendell.
