Royal daughter of Turgon

The daughter of Turgon, King of Gondolin; she wedded Ulmo's messenger Tuor, and their son was Eärendil the Mariner.

Tolkien put forward several different origins of the name Idril at different times. The derivation from Itarillë given here appears to be the latest of these, but earlier works preferred to base the name on quite different Elvish root-words, giving it a meaning like 'sweet heart' or 'beloved'.
