The ninth King of Rohan was Helm son of Gram, a man of grim mood and great strength. Among his vassals was one named Freca, who was of distant kin to Helm, but it was said that the blood of Dunland also ran in his veins. Though Helm did not trust Freca, he was still granted a place on the King's council. One fateful day Freca rode to Edoras from his own lands on the banks of the Adorn with an escort of many men, and demanded that Helm give his daughter in marriage to Freca's son Wulf. Outside the hall of Meduseld, Helm struck Freca a fatal blow with his great fist, and from that time on he was known to history as Helm Hammerhand.
