Grey Messenger

A title of Gandalf

One of the several titles given to Gandalf that reference his colour within the Order of Wizards (he was commonly referred to as the Grey Pilgrim or Grey Wanderer, the sources of his Elvish name Mithrandir). 'Grey Messenger' is a rarer term, relating to the arrival of the Wizards at the Grey Havens in approximately III 1000. The Elves who received them understood them to be emissaries of the Valar, hence the reference to them as 'Messengers' (correspondingly, Saruman was referred to at this time as the 'White Messenger').
