Great Song

The Music before the beginning of the world

One of several names for the Great Music at the beginning of time that gave rise to the world, most usually called the Music of the Ainur or, in Elvish, the Ainulindalë. The Song was created when Eru Ilúvatar gathered the Ainur and caused them to create a vast and complex harmony of music. He called on each of them to bring their own powers and thoughts to bear on their part, and Melkor in particular wove his own desire for mastery into the Great Song. After its ending, Ilúvatar created a Vision of the world that had sprung from the Music, and then gave that Vision reality, thus bringing the universe and the world into being.
