One of the many names given to the island of Númenor was Andor, the Land of Gift, because that island had been created by the Valar as a reward for the valour of the Edain during the First Age. As the centuries passed, the Men of Númenor gradually turned away from the Valar. Their last King, Ar-Pharazôn, fell under the influence of Sauron and set out in arms to invade the land of the Powers in the West. His attempt at invasion failed disastrously, and the Land of Gift was lost, sunk forever beneath the waves of the Great Sea.
