Edrahil

Loyal follower of Finrod Felagund

An Elf of Nargothrond, and loyal follower of Finrod Felagund. When Beren came to Nargothrond seeking Finrod's aid in his quest for a Silmaril, Finrod was bound by an oath to offer him help on his quest, and Celegorm and Curufin used the opportunity to cast doubt on Felagund's rule. Edrahil was one of the few who stood by the King, and when Finrod threw aside his silver crown, Edrahil picked it up and gave it to Finrod's brother Orodreth, who would indeed succeed his brother as King.

When Finrod and Beren left Nargothrond to seek a Silmaril, Edrahil led the ten companions who went with them. Their attempt to pass Sauron's Isle of Tol-in-Gaurhoth failed, and they were imprisoned in its dungeons. It was there that Edrahil met his end, devoured by a werewolf that lurked in the dark.

Notes

1

Edrahil's name is difficult to parse. Edra- looks as though it might be related to edro, 'open'. -hil usually signifies a Man (a human, one of the Hildor) but we know that Edrahil was an Elf, so - assuming this etymology applies - it would apparently indicate more generally a 'male person' in this context. So, Edrahil's name can be interpreted as 'open man', though it is difficult to see what that might mean as part of a personal name. It seems more likely that some other linguistic element is at work here, and the meaning of the name remains uncertain.
