"He is called
Théoden Ednew in the lore of
Rohan, for he fell into a decline under the spells of
Saruman, but was healed by
Gandalf..."
The Lord of the Rings
Appendix A II
The House of Eorl
An Old English word meaning 'renewed' or 'restored'. It was used as a title for Théoden of Rohan after Gandalf cured him of the malign influence of Saruman and the poisonous lies of Saruman's agent Gríma Wormtongue. Before Gandalf's intervention, the King had been become no more than a decrepit old man, but after his 'renewal', he led his people on to great victories in the War of the Ring before his death on the battlefield of the Pelennor.
