Eagles of the Misty Mountains

Also called simply the Eagles of the Mountains, these Great Eagles made their Eyrie on the Great Shelf, on a pinnacle of rock that stood out to the east of the Misty Mountains' main range. Though often aloof from the doings of Elves or Men, they were willing to play a part in events at times. It was these Eagles who rescued Thorin and Company during the Quest of Erebor, and during the War of the Ring they also lent their aid, especially as spies on the movements of the Enemy. Notably, their leader Gwaihir rescued Gandalf twice, from the Pinnacle of Orthanc and later from the aftermath of the Battle of the Peak.
