Dragon-reek

The odious vapours of the Dragons

Also called 'Wormstench', the fog of vapours exuded by Dragons. Those that entered the reek were filled with a blind terror that few could withstand. It is unclear whether all Dragons emitted the Dragon-reek, but it is established that both Glaurung and Smaug produced this horrifying stench. Glaurung in particular could hardly be approached for power of it, and Túrin himself nearly succumbed to its power before he succeeded in slaying the Great Worm. Smaug's Dragon-reek was apparently rather less potent, but it still lingered in the halls of Erebor even after the Dragon himself had left them.
