In our World, Dogs were bred from Wolves, but it's unclear whether this applies in Tolkien's universe. We know that there were Hounds in Valinor (specifically, Huan) when Arda was only a few thousand years old, and it's hard to imagine the Valar urgently breeding Wolf-stock to produce the first Dogs so quickly. |
