Debatable Land

The northern marches of Nargothrond

A land extending from the wooded southern slopes of the Ered Wethrin, southward across the Mountains of Shadow from Dor-lómin. This land, surrounding the sources of the rivers Ginglith and Narog, became the northern frontier of Nargothrond during its last years (the 'debatable' part of its name presumably refers to conflicts with the forces of Morgoth, who marauded through the surrounding lands at this time). The name is rare; it is in fact only used once, and then given in quotation marks, implying that it represents a translation of an unrecorded Elvish term for the region.
