Cottar

The ancestor of the Cotton family

Cottar
Cotman
Carl

The oldest known member of the Cotton family, though in fact the name 'Cotton' would not appear until the time of his grandson Holman Cotton. Cottar was born in the year 1220 by the Shire-reckoning, that is some two centuries before the War of the Ring. He had two sons, Cotman and Carl. Cotman married Rose, the daughter of Holman the greenhanded, and so began a long association between Cottar's descendants and Holman's.

Notes

1

Cottar's name is not specifically explained, but we know that Tolkien used cot was a translation of the Hobbits' word hloth, meaning a cottage or Hobbit-hole with just two rooms. On that basis, we can probably interpret the name Cottar as something like 'dweller in a small Hobbit-hole', or perhaps simply as 'cottager'.
