Brown Lands

Map of the Brown Lands

The blighted lands that lay on the eastern banks of the Anduin, between the Emyn Muil in the south and the borders of Rhovanion in the north.

Notes

1

The text of The Lord of the Rings offers little specific information about the creation of the Brown Lands, other than Treebeard's rather vague report that they were formed 'in the time of the war between Sauron and the Men of the Sea' (The Two Towers III 4, Treebeard). In itself that might refer to various conflicts throughout the Second Age. However, in his letters Tolkien is explicit that this region (where the gardens of the Entwives had once been found) was destroyed during the War of the Last Alliance, at some point between II 3429 and II 3441.
