Bregalad

The Ent known as Quickbeam

The 'hasty' Ent known to the Hobbits as 'Quickbeam', who befriended Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took during the Entmoot that preceded the Ents' attack on Isengard. Bregalad later played an important role in that attack himself.

Notes

1

Bregalad is described as being among the youngest of the Ents of Fangorn Forest, but nonetheless he was very old indeed. Exactly how old is ambiguous, but he recalled the 'quiet of the world' from uncounted years in the past (The Two Towers IV 3, Treebeard).

2

Bregalad's name is universally translated as 'Quickbeam', but this is not an absolutely strict interpretation, or at least not into modern English. Elvish Bregalad literally means 'quick tree' (in reference to Bregalad's hastiness in the eyes of his fellow Ents). The -beam in the translated name does in fact mean 'tree' in Old English, coming from the word béam in that language. Tolkien's choice of the name 'Quickbeam' was doubtless influenced by the fact that this was a real traditional name for the rowan or mountain ash, a tree that Bregalad held in special reverence.
