Bow and Helm

The Two Captains of Amon Rûdh

A name given to the two warriors who led a resistance against the incoming forces of Morgoth from their impenetrable refuge on the summit of Amon Rûdh. The 'Bow' referred to Beleg Strongbow, famed for his archery and his great bow Belthronding, and the 'Helm' was Túrin Turambar, bearer of the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin. Together these Two Captains founded a small but well-defended land southward of Brethil that came to be known as Dor-Cúarthol, the Land of Bow and Helm. That land did not last long: their stronghold on Amon Rûdh could not be taken by force, but it could be betrayed, and so it was. Mîm, the original owner of the hidden house, led a troop of Orcs there in secret. The defenders were slaughtered, and Beleg the Bow was left for dead while Túrin the Helm was carried off as a prisoner of the Orcs.
