Anborn

A tracker of Ithilien

A Man of Gondor and Ranger of Ithilien, who tracked Gollum in the last days of the War of the Ring. His captain Faramir overruled his desire to kill the creature; if Gollum had died at Anborn's hand, he would have been unable to play his later part at the Cracks of Doom, and Sauron would almost certainly have been victorious in the War of the Ring.

Notes

1

Anborn's name is not specifically explained, and its meaning by no means obvious. The prefix an- might have any of several meanings in Elvish; for example, it might signify 'long', or simply be an intended as an intensifier. The -born element is perhaps connected to boron, 'enduring' or 'steadfast'. So, possible readings of the name might include 'long enduring' or 'very steadfast'.
