Galador

The first Lord of Dol Amroth

The son of Imrazôr the Númenórean and (at least, according to legend) the Elf-maid Mithrellas, Galador became the first Lord of Dol Amroth. He established himself as lord of Belfalas in southern Gondor, a title that his descendants maintained until at least the early Fourth Age.

Galador's dates appear only in The History of Middle-earth volume XII, The Peoples of Middle-earth. They cannot therefore be considered completely reliable.

Galador's name is never explicitly translated by Tolkien. In The Etymologies (in volume 5 of The History of Middle-earth) a name 'Galadhor' appears, but its derivation is unclear, being linked to words for both 'thrive' and 'tree'. The element -dor is possibly from the root tor, 'brother', a presumption based on the fact that Galador's father had both a son and a daughter by the Elf-maid Mithrellas. It should be emphasised that this interpretation is highly speculative.
