Eärnil II

EÄRNUR

Son of Eärnil II, and last King of Gondor. In his youth, he defeated the Witch-king of Angmar at the Battle of Fornost. The Witch-king returned to Minas Morgul, and issued a challenge to Eärnur, who answered it and, entering Minas Morgul, was lost. After him, the realm of Gondor was ruled by hereditary Stewards, the first of whom was Mardil Voronwë.

Notes

1	The date of Eärnur's birth appears only in The History of Middle-earth volume XII, The Peoples of Middle-earth. It cannot therefore be considered completely reliable.
2	Eärnur was taunted into travelling to Minas Morgul by the Lord of the Nazgûl in III 2050. He was never heard from again, and it is presumed that he died there, but the details of his fate were never discovered with certainty.
